The Haunted Lake by P.J. Lynch (extended picture book for older readers--beautifully creepy illustrated tale)

Black Dog by Levi Pinfold (a story about being afraid...or not)

Creepy Carrots! by Aaron Reynolds (words) and Peter Brown (pictures) (carrots are defending themselves! [there are sequels!])

Outside Over There by Maurice Sendak (The baby has been stolen by goblins and sister Ida must come to the rescue; for an actually scary safe-scare book, this is an enduring classic)
